Subscribers

Keep your list accurate: find anyone, fix their details, and remove people who ask to leave, with an export whenever you want a copy.

Audience is where your subscribers live. It shows how your list is growing, with Add and Import cards for bringing people in and a Groups section for each group you’ve saved. Select the Subscribers card to see everyone.

Add a subscriber

  1. Open Audience.
  2. Select Add.
  3. Enter their email address.
  4. Fill in any field values and choose tags.
  5. Select Save.

XOXO won’t add a temporary address, a role address like noreply@, or anyone else it skips. To add many people at once, connect a platform or import a CSV.

Caution

Manual adds don’t send a confirmation email. Only add people who asked to hear from you. The Acceptable Use Policy applies to everyone you add.

View subscribers

  1. Open Audience, then select the Subscribers card.
  2. Optional: to see one group, select the group name at the top of the list and choose it. Everyone shows the whole list again. Or, to narrow the list, select the filter button.
  3. Select a subscriber to see their details.

To jump straight to one person, enter their email in Find by email on the Audience page.

A subscriber’s page opens with how they joined (by hand, from a file, from a connection, or through a form) and when. Below that are their fields, tags, and the groups they belong to, then every email sent to them, with when it was sent and whether it was opened or clicked.

Edit a subscriber

  1. Open a subscriber.
  2. Select Edit.
  3. Change their email address, field values, or tags.
  4. Select Save.

To tag many people at once, see applying tags.

Export subscribers

An export includes the subscribers currently shown, so the group or filters you’ve applied come along. The file has a column for the email address, the source, each of your fields, tags, and the date each person joined.

  1. Open Audience, then select the Subscribers card.
  2. Optional: select the group name at the top of the list to export a group, or select the filter button to export only part of your audience.
  3. Select Actions, then Export CSV.
  4. When the export is ready, select Download in the notification.

The Download button stays in the notification until you close it. If you close it before downloading, run the export again.

Delete subscribers

To delete one person, select Delete on their page, or choose Delete from the actions menu on their row. To delete several, filter the list, select Actions, then Delete. Then:

  1. If they asked to be removed, turn on Unsubscribe.
  2. Select Delete to confirm.

Caution

Turning on Unsubscribe keeps the address from coming back. The person can return only by confirming a signup form themselves. Unsubscribes, bounces, and complaints has the rules.

Addresses XOXO skips

However someone arrives, by hand, from a file, or from a connection, XOXO updates people already in your audience instead of duplicating them. It skips invalid addresses, misspelled domains like gmial.com, temporary addresses, role addresses like noreply@, and addresses that previously unsubscribed, bounced, or complained, as the next section explains. Imports also skip addresses that can’t receive mail.

Unsubscribes, bounces, and complaints

When someone unsubscribes, an email to them bounces for good, or they mark an email as spam, XOXO removes them from your audience and remembers why. Manual adds, imports, and connections can’t add that address back.

If the person later confirms a signup form themselves, the record is cleared and they rejoin. That covers unsubscribes (including deletes where you turned on Unsubscribe), bounces, and removals a connected platform asked for when someone withdrew consent or asked for their data to be deleted.

Two cases are permanent. A spam complaint, or a report from the Didn’t sign up? link in a confirmation email, keeps the address out even if the person tries a form again.
